17. A Pair of Glasses
Lást wéek I had my éyes tésted.
"My wife thinks I néed glásses," I expláined to the optician.
"I knów I dón't need glasses.I  can sée véry well.k
The optician tésted my eyes, "You ought to wear glásses, sir," he said.
"Come and choose a pair of frames."
"I can sée véry well withóut glasses," I insisted, but if you say I
néed them, I'll háve to háve them"
The optician did not ánswer me. He shówed me some frámes.
"Choose a pair of thése,"he sáid." Thése frámes are made of plástic,  and thése are made of métal. Thése are tórtoise-shéll and are ráther dear."
"I'll have the plástic ones,"I said.
"Do you think they suit you?" he asked and hánded me a mirror.
I réached out for the mirror and missed. It cráshed to the floor and bróke into a thousand pleces.
"I'm véry sórry," I sáid and blúshed.
"It doesn't mátter," he optician ánswered, "We lose a 1ôt of mirrors like thát."
"Wěll," I sáid, "I cértainly néed gláses."
"You certainly dó," the optician answered with a smile. "Your wife
was right."

Our New Secretary
The télephone ráng and our new sécretary, Miss Simpson, ánswered it.
"Máy I spéak to Mr Calder, pléase?"a voice sáid.
"Who is spéaking pléase?"Miss Simpson ásked.
"Mr Alan Bright," the voice sáid.
Miss Simpson put her hánd over the mouthplece and spóke to Mr
Cálder.
It's Mr. Alan Bright, sir," she sáid."He wants to spéak to you.k
"Whát, agáin!" Mr Cálder exclaimed. lHe wánts to séll us those
néw typewriters, dóesn't he?"
"Yés, sir," Miss Simpson sáid.'He called yesterday
And he ráng up five times lást wéek. We don't néed new týpe-
writers. I tóld him thát yésterday," Mr. Calder sáid.
"Whát shall I sáy, sir?"Miss Simpson ásked.
"Say that I'm not in my óffice," Mr Calder såid cróssly.
Miss Simpson spoke into the recéiver. "Mr. Bright,' she sáid, "I'm
afraid you cán't spéak to Mr. Cälder nów. Mr Cálder sáys that he's
nót in his óffice."
